Post-Treatment Instructions for Juvederm / Allergan Fillers

  • Immediately after the treatment, there may be slight redness, swelling, tenderness, and itching in the treated area, which is normal. The inconvenience is temporary and generally disappears in a day or two. If the inconvenience continues or other reactions occur, don't hesitate to contact Dr. Dimino.
  • The initial swelling after lip treatment may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week, and their lips can look somewhat uneven during this time. This means the result directly after the treatment should not be seen as the final result.
  • Avoid touching the treated area within the following 6 hours. After that, apply light makeup and gently wash the area with soap and water.
  • Do not expose the treated area to intense heat until the initial swelling and redness resolve. Ice packs may help with swelling.
  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could trigger another eruption of cold sores.
  • If you are using aspirin or any similar medication, be aware that these may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Finally, since Juvederm fillers gradually dissolves, the correction does not last forever. Many people choose to be treated again within 6-18 months of the original treatment.

Guidelines Following  Sclerotherapy Injections

  1. Cotton balls and tape are applied over the treated areas to keep the sclerosing solution in contact with the blood vessel walls. These should be left on overnight and removed the following morning after sclerotherapy.
  2. You may immediately return to normal activities following sclerotherapy. We recommend walking for about 15 minutes following sclerotherapy. However, we recommend abstinence from jogging, aerobics, or strenuous physical exercise for 24 hours.
  3. Some bruising is expected, which should resolve in 1-2 weeks. Scabbing is normal and usually resolves in 1 week. If you develop sores or ulcers that do not heal in 1 week, please notify our office immediately.
  4. We also recommend wearing moderate pressure stockings/hosiery (i.e., Jobst 15mmHg)) for  6-8 hours daily (while awake) for 3-6 weeks post-sclerotherapy.

We are concerned about your success with this procedure. If you have any questions or concerns, Dr. Dimino can be reached at (949) 721-8300 and after hours at (949) 285-0177.

Post Injection Instructions for Botox (Botulinum Toxin)

  1. For 4 hours post-injection, it is imperative to keep your head in the upright position. DO NOT sleep flat, and DO NOT exercise for 4 hours.
  2. DO NOT massage, manipulate, or touch the area of injection.
  3. To help decrease the possibility of bruising, DO NOT take aspirin, aspirin-containing products, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, etc., for 7-10 days before and 2 days after injection.
  4. For the 4-hour post-injection period, DO use the muscles injected as much as possible; for example, frown, smile, and wrinkle your forehead. Muscle activity can improve results.
  5. Remember that muscle paralysis from Botox takes 3-4 days and may not be complete for 2 weeks. Although Botox lasts 4 months in the lab, most patients return for repeat injections at 4-6 months. Deep wrinkles will improve but may not resolve completely. Please return to the office after 2 weeks if you need additional treatments.

Instructions Post-Wart Treatment

You have just been treated with liquid nitrogen to remove warts. The pain and burning sensation will last about 20-60 minutes. Redness and a blister will follow. The blister will be either transparent or red/purple. The blister will often be larger than the treated area, and if several adjacent regions are treated, the blister may expand to encompass all the treated areas. Do not be concerned.

Once the blister occurs, clean the area with soap and water. Carefully pop the blister (superficially) with the sterile 11-blade supplied, then rewash the area with soap and water.

Once the blister is popped and cleaned, please clean the wound twice daily with soap and water and apply Aquaphor (an over-the-counter ointment) and a Band-Aid. Please avoid covering the area before the blister has been popped and cleaned.

Remember that warts often take multiple treatments to resolve, as the virus can be resistant to treatment.

Following up with your next appointment is essential because if the wart is unresolved, treating it again approximately 1 month after the first treatment is best.

A small amount of clear yellow drainage and peripheral pinkness is part of the normal healing process. However, if persistent purulent, foul-smelling drainage and redness occur, please call our office immediately. An infection or allergic reaction may be present.

If you have any questions or concerns, Dr. Dimino can be reached at (949) 721-8300 and after hours at (949) 285-0177.

Taking Care of a Peel

The most critical concept in healing from a peel is to allow the old skin to stay in place as a bandage as long as possible. Anything that promotes premature peeling of this skin will increase the chances of complications.

Not scratching, pulling, or rubbing your skin after the peel is essential. Doing so may damage the underlying new skin and cause changes in pigmentation or scarring.

Liquid Nitrogen/Cryosurgery Instructions

  1. Pain may be present during treatment and for a short time after. (20-60 minutes.) If pain persists, Tylenol may be taken.
  2. Growths will get dark and crusty and often will look worse before they look better.
  3. Blisters may or may not form. If they do, they will usually be within 24 hours. The blister fluid may be transparent or dark blood-colored. Try not to pick the blister or growth.
  4. Once a blister or scab forms, cleanse the affected area with hydrogen peroxide and apply Aquaphor ointment and a bandaid. Clean the area once to twice daily until healed, usually in 1-2 weeks. Please avoid sunlight, swimming pools, oceans, and lakes until wounds are healed.

A Note for All Our Surgical Procedure Patients

Although this was a minor procedure, there is still a chance of complications. Some bleeding may occur. If so, apply pressure with a piece of gauze or facial tissue for 15 minutes. It is usual for healing wounds to feel slightly tender to the touch or itch and to look pink around the edges. A small amount of clear or lightly yellow-tinged drainage is also expected. Call the office (949-721-8300) or call  Dr. Dimino’s cell at (949-285-0177) if any of the following occurs:

  1. Bleeding persists after 15-30 full minutes of applied pressure.
  2. Significant swelling at/around the site
  3. Heat around the site
  4. Redness, or red streaks near the site
  5. Pus and/or foul-smelling drainage from the site
  6. Severe pain that the use of Tylenol cannot control.
  7. Fever/Chills in association with any of the above

Shave Biopsy Care:

  1. Do not get the area wet for 24 hours
  2. Clean the area twice daily (AM & PM) with soap and water or Hypocyn spray.
  3. Apply Aquaphor or mupiricin with a cotton swab.
  4. Apply a fresh bandage twice daily (AM & PM) until healed. Keeping the area covered will help speed healing.
  5. For the first 24 hours: Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen products.

Excision or Punch Biopsy Care:. Since you have stitches, special care must be taken to prevent infection:

  1. Do not get the area wet for 24 hours.
  2. Clean the area once or twice daily (AM&PM) with soap and water or Hypocyn spray
  3. Apply Aquaphor or mupirocin with a cotton swab.
  4. Apply a fresh bandage once or twice daily until the sutures are removed. Keeping the area covered will help speed healing. Do not go swimming until the stitches are removed. Showering after the first 24 hours is fine. After showering, please cleanse the area and apply Aquaphor or mupirocin and a new dry dressing.
  5. Avoid physical activity with the treated area until the sutures are removed. Sometimes, bending, straining, stooping, or lifting heavy objects can cause the surgical incision to bleed or open up. If the biopsy was on the face or scalp areas, avoid bending over, and sleep with two pillows (elevate head) at night.
  6. For the first 48 hours: Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen products. Do not drink alcoholic beverages and/or take oral vitamin E, fish oil, or omegas. (These can cause bleeding) Take Tylenol for pain.
  7. To help decrease swelling and pain, we recommend applying ice over the bandage for 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off while awake during the first 48-72 hours after surgery.
  8. Return to the office for your suture removal as scheduled. All patients are called with biopsy results as soon as they are received, usually within 2 weeks. Please phone the office if you don't hear from us within 3 weeks.

If you have any questions regarding the care and healing of your wound, please do not hesitate to call our office at (949) 721-8300 or call Dr. Dimino’s cell at (949) 285-0177 (leave a verbal message and please allow Dr. Dimino at least 15 minutes to return your call.)

A Note for Surgical Procedure Patients with Steri-Strips or Micromend

Although this was a minor procedure, there is still a chance of complications. Some bleeding may occur. If so, apply pressure with gauze or facial tissue for 15-30 minutes. It is typical for healing wounds to feel slightly tender to the touch or itch and to look pink around the edges. A small amount of clear or somewhat yellow-tinged drainage is also expected. Call the office (949-721-8300) or call  Dr. Dimino’s cell at (949-285-0177) if any of the following occurs:

  1. Bleeding persists after 15-20 full minutes of applied pressure.
  2. Significant swelling at/around the site
  3. Heat around the site
  4. Redness, or red streaks near the site
  5. Pus and/or foul-smelling drainage from the site
  6. Severe pain that the use of Tylenol cannot control.
  7. Fever/Chills in association with any of the above

Excision

Since you have stitches, special care must be taken to prevent infection:

  1. Do not remove the dressing for 24 hours.
  2. After 24 hours, please remove the bulky pressure dressing but leave the water-resistant (Tegaderm) dressing and underlying steri-strips intact.
  3. You can shower after 24 hours, but please avoid direct contact with the water on the site. Do not submerge the site in a bathtub, ocean, pool, lake, etc.
  4. Do not remove the Tegaderm (water-resistant bandage). If it comes loose or water gets under it, please call the office.
  5. Do not remove steri-strips or Micromend. The wound could open if the steri-strips are removed.
  6. Do not use Aquaphor, Polysporin, Neosporin, or other antibiotic ointment.
  7. Avoid physical activity with the treated area until sutures are removed. Sometimes, bending, straining, stooping, or lifting heavy objects can cause the surgical incision to bleed or open up. If the biopsy was on the face or scalp, avoid bending over and sleep with 2 pillows (elevate head) at night.
  8. For the first 48 hours: Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen products . Do not drink alcoholic beverages and/or take oral vitamin E, fish oil or omegas. (These can cause bleeding.) Take Tylenol for pain.
  9. To help decrease swelling and pain, we recommend applying ice over the bandage for 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off while awake during the first 48-72 hours after surgery.  Ice helps the most in the first 72 hours, but as long as there is swelling, ice will help.
  10. Don't forget to return to the office for your suture removal as scheduled.

All patients are called with biopsy results as soon as they are received- usually within 2 weeks. If you don't hear from us within 3 weeks, please phone the office.
